Understanding PACS Workflow

With the help of top information technology, medical information storage and sharing – especially related to medical images – can be done seamlessly through a system called PACS or Picture Archiving and Communication System. Using this particular system, doctors and medical personnel can integrate different parts of the examination process.

Different diagnostic tools such as CT modality or MR modality can now capture digital images. These captured images will then be streamed to medical image storage server for further storage and use. The process is designed to be fully automatic so there is no need for prints and hardcopies.

Once the data is stored in the medical image storage server, doctors and other related medical personnel can then access the information through secured connections. If the server is set to be online, the information can even be accessed from virtually anywhere in the planet as long as an access terminal and a working internet connection are available.

The server will also function not only as storage but also as an archive. All stored information will be organized properly while regular backups are scheduled to make sure the important information are all well protected and can be retrieved without hassle whenever it’s necessary.
